Christy DeBurton & The Yoga Room
Christy DeBurton became a registered yoga teacher (RYT) in 1998. She is known for her gentle yet encouraging teaching style that encompasses both the physical and spiritual aspects of yoga practice. Christy gives her students much more than a good workout - she encourages them to take what they learn on the mat and apply it in their daily lives: such practices as mindfulness, loving-kindness, self acceptance, non-reactivity and living in the present moment. Christy's commitment to helping people heal, both on a physical and emotional level, is evident in her teachings. Her yoga classes are known for their creative sequences, clear instruction and hands-on adjustments.
In her twenties, Christy earned a degree from Alma College in Michigan and began a career as a cost analyst in the automotive industry. It was here that she came to realize that she was not on a path that would allow her to achieve her highest potential. Determined to change that reality, Christy took a leap of faith, quit her job, and spent a season working and studying at the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies in New York. Upon returning to Michigan in 1998, Christy began teaching t'ai chi and yoga classes in her hometown of Howell, where she was largely responsible for popularizing those disciplines. A couple years later, she became the first instructor to introduce Vinyasa yoga to the Ann Arbor community.
In 2004, Christy established her own yoga studio, The Yoga Room, where she holds ongoing group yoga classes, private yoga sessions and special yoga workshops. Over the years, Christy has continued her training at the Center for Yoga here in Michigan as well as at workshops and conferences across the country. She is proud to have completed intensive studies with renowned yoga teachers from around the world.
For Christy, yoga isn’t just a job or a workout; it is a way of life. Through her yoga studio, she has been able to start many programs that add true value to Ann Arbor and the local yoga community. Christy is a founding member of Yoga Serves, a volunteer group that offers their time to a wide range of community service organizations. She started a book club at The Yoga Room as well, which meets every other month. And, each year Christy holds yoga retreats in Michigan and in more exotic locales. These weekend or weeklong retreats include daily yoga classes and other group activities based on the destination. Christy is also a member of the Yoga Alliance, a national education and support organization for yoga teachers in the US.
