Christy DeBurton & The Yoga Room
"I am strongly committed to supporting my students in their journey toward greater self-awareness & well-being. Since becoming a registered yoga teacher (RYT) in 1998 I have cultivated a teaching style that encompasses the physical, mental & spiritual aspects of yoga practice. My yoga classes are well-known for their creative sequences & themes, clear instruction and hands-on adjustments. I make yoga practical and encourage my students to take what they learn on the mat and apply it in their daily lives: mindfulness, self-acceptance, equanimity, "finding the balance between effort and ease."
I earned a degree from Alma College in 1993 and began a career in the automotive industry. Realizing I was not on a path that would allow me to achieve my highest potential--and determined to change that reality--I took a leap of faith, quit my job, and spent the next two years working & studying to become a Registered Yoga Teacher at the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies in New York. Upon returning to Michigan in 1998 I brought t'ai chi & yoga classes to my hometown of Howell and, a couple years later, I became the first instructor to introduce Vinyasa yoga to the Ann Arbor community."
"In 2004 I opened my own private yoga studio, The Yoga Room, where I hold small group yoga classes, private sessions and special yoga workshops. Over the years I completed more training at the Center for Yoga in MI and continue to be committed to deepening my knowledge of yoga philosophy, holistic health, anatomy & more with renowned yoga instructors, doctors and other teachers from around the world.
I truly believe that yoga is a way of life. Besides teaching weekly yoga classes, I have had the opportunity to implement some programs that add true value to Ann Arbor and our local yoga community. I helped found Yoga Serves, a volunteer group that offers their time to a wide range of community service organizations. I started a book club at The Yoga Room, which meets every other month. I also hold yoga retreats in Michigan and in more exotic locales, as well as workshops on mindfulness, meditation, healthy eating and more. Through these offerings I am committed to supporting the health, well-being and personal transformation not just of my students but of all beings everywhere."
