Since 2008 our Yoga Book Club has met every other month to discuss inspirational books on a wide range of holistic topics including yoga philosophy, spiritual growth, psychology & more. Members take turns hosting in their homes - or even poolside when the weather is nice! Our discussions are made even more enjoyable by the healthy vegan dishes everyone brings to share for our dinner potlucks. Email Christy if you’d like to join - all Yoga Room students are welcome!

Fed Up: Emotional Labor, Women & The Way Forward by Gemma Hartley
In 2017, Hartley wrote an article about the invisible maintenance and managerial tasks women are expected to perform. Here she expands it to consider how instead of remaining a woman's burden, emotional labor may offer a path to gender equality.
She shares stories from her own life balancing the responsibilities of a freelance writer, wife and mother. She acknowledges her husband's contributions but observes an imbalance in the cultural tendency to give men extra credit for doing such work while women get no credit at all. Kids grow up watching their mothers manage the home, and so the gendered cycle continues.
Female readers will relate to the many first-person anecdotes of women doing the draining work of emotional labor. But this is a book for men, too. To break the cycle, men need to step up to the plate. And then put it in the dishwasher.
We will discuss this book on Wednesday, August 7, 6:30-8:30pm. RSVP to Christy by August 5 for this month's location.
