The 5th Chakra is located in the area of the neck, throat, jaw, mouth and shoulders, and it resonates with our inner truth and helps us find a way to convey our voice to the outside world. This chakra, associated with the color blue, is all about our ability to communicate clearly and be able to speak our truth. Visuddha means ‘purification.’
Deficient energy in this chakra leads to neck stiffness, shoulder tension, teeth grinding, jaw disorders, throat ailments, an underactive thyroid, a fear of speaking, being withdrawn and being shy. Excessive talking, an inability to listen, hearing difficulties, stuttering, and an overactive thyroid are all related to excessive energy in this chakra.
To find balance in our 5th chakra, we did many different poses such as neck and shoulder stretches, bridge pose, shoulderstand, plow, fish pose, thread the needle, reverse table/plank and more. I don’t know about you, but I could definitely feel some ‘purification’ going on in my throat during practice–a little coughing, throat-clearing, etc. Good stuff! ;) I ended our classes with a reminder that our words are energy–so to take our practice off our mat, we need to be conscious of what kind of energy we’re putting out into the world through our voice and through our words.
P.S. Above is a picture of the chakra bracelet that the Bead Brat, Sue Doyle, made me in honor of our “Balancing Your Chakras” session. It is made with Swarovski crystals and silver. She is selling them for only $15. It is definitely helping to remind me to put into practice all the qualities that we are focusing on during our chakra classes each week. If you would like to place a special order for one please let me know.
