How to Balance Your Root Chakra

The Chakras–or subtle energy centers within your body–are associated with particular functions in your body, as well as life issues and how you handle them. When you work with the ancient wisdom of these energy centers you can release physical and emotional blockages, gain insight into personal issues, and empower yourself to manifest the life you want and deserve. In my upcoming Journey Through the Chakras ‘Live+Virtual’ online yoga course that begins in January, I support you in doing just that by sharing  different yoga sequences that correspond to each one of the Chakras, helping you to tune into their subtle energies. In this blog post, I will share with you how to balance your Root Chakra through your yoga practice.

We start our Chakra journey from the ground up. We can’t work with the other Chakras and what they mean in our life until we’ve built our stable foundation. The 1st Chakra, or Muladhara (Root) Chakra is found at the base of spine and is associated with the legs and feet. Circumstances that pull up your roots such as big changes in your body, family, finances, or work can cause an imbalance in this Chakra. (COVID pandemic, anyone?) Some people may just feel ungrounded in general; if you tend to live more in your head than in your body you may have an imbalance in this Chakra.

If you relate to any of these examples, your yoga practice should include strong standing postures to build strength in the legs (your foundation), as well as stretches for the backs of legs and bottom of the feet. This will help you feel more grounded and find balance in this root chakra. Try out this short 1st Chakra Slow Flow Standing Sequence that includes some good poses for strengthening and stretching the legs.

When your 1st Chakra is balanced you’ll feel grounded, safe and secure. You’ll be able to meet your basic survival needs and know how to take good care of yourself. You’ll feel comfortable in your body and enjoy good physical health and a sense of wellbeing. Finally, the energy of this Chakra will help you to be more centered and present.

Namaste

“The success of yoga does not lie in the ability to perform postures but in how it positively changes the way we live our life and our relationships.”
