We began a new session this past week at The Yoga Room, and our theme for this session is Wisdom from the Virtues Cards. This deck of cards was given to me a few years ago by a yoga student. The Virtues Project is a global grassroots initiative to inspire the practice of virtues in everyday life. Each week of this session I will randomly be drawing a card from the deck, and we will work with the virtue on that card, incorporating it into our yoga practice both on and off our mat.
I chuckled when I randomly pulled the card from the deck for this first week of our session because it was Flexibility. Here’s a little of what it says: “Flexibility is the ability to adapt and change amid the fluctuating circumstances of life. We go with the flow, seeing the choices, challenges and opportunities in all that happens. We do not insist on our own way. We are open to the opinions and feelings of others. When the unexpected comes, we rise to the challenge with resilience and confidence. We are willing to change unproductive habits. We are willing to grow. We enjoy spontaneity and we welcome surprises.”
One of the realizations that I have had from my own yoga practice is that by becoming more physically flexible, I have become more flexible mentally and emotionally as well. Thank you, yoga, for helping me to bend but not break!
