Last week we began our “Balancing Your Chakras” session here at The Yoga Room by focusing on the 1st Chakra. Muladhara (Root) Chakra is associated with the color red. It is located at the base of the spine, and has to do with tending to our basic survival needs, establishing a healthy sense of groundedness, taking good basic care of ourselves, and purging the body of wastes. The associated body parts include the base of the spine, the legs, feet and the large intestine.
Circumstances that can cause a first chakra imbalance include things like traveling, relocation, feeling fearful, and any kind of big changes–to our body, our family, our finances, etc. Some people feel ungrounded most of the time, as they tend to live more in their head than in their body.
In our practice we focused on postures that would ‘root’ our focus downward into the lower half of the body, so lots of strong standing postures and balances, as well as postures that stretched the backs of the legs and postures that brought us down close to the ground.
I hope all of you who attended last week’s classes left feeling grounded, steady, centered, balanced, calm, re-connected to your inner stillness, and reminded of both your outer and inner strength–signs that you had, in fact, balanced your 1st Chakra!
P.S. Above is a picture of the chakra bracelet that the Bead Brat, Sue Doyle, made me in honor of our “Balancing Your Chakras” session. It is made with Swarovski crystals and silver. She is selling them for only $15. Since I started wearing it I can already tell that it is helping to remind me to put into practice all the things that we focused on during our 1st chakra practice last week which I mentioned above. If you would like to place a special order for one please let me know.
